Why Tradewright Exists

Tradewright CPA started with a respect I've had since I was a kid.

Growing up, a handful of my friends' dads were home services contractors. Flooring, plumbing, HVAC guys. I watched their businesses grow over the years, and I watched what that growth bought them. The snowmobiles. The cabin. The boat. Vacations they actually took. These were guys who worked with their hands, built something real, and gave their families a good life doing it.

That stuck with me. I respected those guys. They weren't given anything on a silver platter. They built it.

Years later, after I'd spent my career in tax and accounting, that respect turned into a focus. I studied the home services industry in depth. I learned what separates the contractors who struggle from the ones who scale. Job costing, cash flow, taxes, pricing, systems. What actually works and what doesn't. That research became Tradewright CPA.

Before Tradewright, I founded and ran a CPA firm that specialized in helping business owners pay less tax using smart strategies. I grew that firm and sold it for a healthy seven-figure valuation. After that, I acquired and merged two Montana-based CPA firms with a partner and helped build a full-service accounting and tax practice. Once that firm could run without my day-to-day involvement, I stepped back to start Tradewright.

Today, Tradewright CPA exists for one reason. To help home services contractors make more money, keep more of it, and run stronger businesses. I don't just understand accounting and taxes. I understand the trades, how these businesses work, and where they get stuck.

That's why Tradewright was built.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between tax planning and tax prep?
Tax prep is filing a return after the year is over. It records what already happened, and by then it's too late to change the outcome. Tax planning happens during the year and before, finding and using strategies that actually lower what you owe. Most contractors have a preparer. Very few have a planner. That gap is usually where the money is.
How does this work?
It starts with the survey. You answer a few questions about your business and your numbers, and we give you an estimate of what you might be overpaying in taxes. If it looks like there's real money on the table, we'll talk about a Tax Blueprint. From there, we earn each step one at a time. No long-term commitment to find out if we can help.
I already have a CPA. Why would I need you?
Most CPAs file your return and move on. They record what already happened. They're not in your business during the year looking for ways to cut your bill, and most generalists don't know the trades well enough to catch what's specific to home services contractors. We do tax planning, not just tax filing, and we do it for one industry. That's a different job than the one your current CPA is doing.
What makes you different from a regular accountant?
Two things. First, we only work with home services contractors, so we know your business: the tax strategies that apply to your structure, your equipment, your crews. Second, we don't stop at finding savings. Once we've unlocked your tax wins, we wire them into a repeatable annual cadence and set up the multi-year plan that compounds, so you keep more of what you earned year after year. That's the full BUILD framework, and it's why our clients stay.
Do you also file my taxes?
Yes. We can handle your tax filing along with the planning, so it's all under one roof and nothing falls through the cracks. A lot of our clients come to us juggling a separate preparer who isn't talking to anyone about strategy. We bring it together. If you'd rather keep your current preparer for filing, we can work that way too.
How much does this cost?
The survey is free. The Tax Blueprint is a flat fee we'll quote you once we understand your situation, and it's backed by our guarantee: you're thrilled with what we find or you get your money back. Ongoing services are priced based on the size and complexity of your business. We'll always be upfront about price before you commit to anything.
What if this is a bigger investment than I usually spend on accounting or tax?
It probably will be, and that's the point. Most contractors are used to paying for tax prep, which is just filing a return after the year is over. What we do is find money you're currently overpaying and help you keep more of it going forward. For most contractors at your size, what we find more than covers what we cost. If it doesn't, you're thrilled with the Blueprint or you get your money back. You're not spending more. You're spending differently, on someone working to put money back in your pocket.
Do you work with contractors in my state?
Yes. We work with home services contractors across the country. Everything we do is virtual, so your location isn't a constraint.
What kind of contractors do you work with?
Home services contractors generally in the $1M to $10M range. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, flooring, roofing, landscaping, and the trades around them. If you're outside that range, reach out anyway and we'll tell you honestly whether we're a fit.
What happens after I fill out the survey?
You'll get an estimate of your potential tax savings. If there's enough there to be worth your time, we'll set up a call to walk through it and talk about a Blueprint. If there isn't, we'll tell you that too. Either way, you'll know more than you did before you started.

It starts with one step.

See what you might be overpaying. The survey is free and takes about three minutes.
